Synagogue Expansion

The project is an addition to an existing synagogue building in Brooklyn, NY. Rather than competing with the existing building, the addition design strives to complement and amplify its strengths. A main circulation corridor is continued into the new addition using existing openings, thus avoiding demolition activities and reducing invasive design interventions. The main space of the addition uses one the facades of the existing building as an interior wall while emphasizing its presence by direct natural light. Finally, the entrance to the new addition faces the existing building rather than the street, allowing it to maintain its urban prominence.
